Gay & Lesbian Travelers
Costa
Rica has a fairly conservative religious background that has enforced a level
of discretion in regards to varying lifestyles. In spite of this, gay and
lesbian travelers have gradually gained acceptance over the last several years.
Nevertheless, overt and explicit displays of affection between homosexual
partners is not an acceptable behavior.
After a police raid on a popular gay club in 1995, the gay rights movement pushed for equal treatment. As a result, tolerance is much higher. Gay and lesbian clubs, resorts and tour companies are steadily popping up throughout the Central Valley.
The Pacific beach of Manuel Antonio is a common hangout for gays and lesbians. Just north is La Playita, a private beach devoted to the homosexual scene.
